Hafez Shirazi-1

نامه‌ای از من اگر سویت نمی اید نرنج

هر چه را مینویسم اشک پاکش میکند

Nameh-ī az man agar suyat nemi āyad naranj

Harcheh rā minavīsam ashak pākesh mi-konad

If thou dost not find any letter from me, don't be hurt,

For everything I write, my tears wash it away.

An excerpt from Edmund Spenser:

One day I wrote her name upon the strand,

But came the waves and washéd it away.

Again I wrote it with a second hand,

But came the tide, and made my pains his prey.
